Versus Expectations

Low expectations rarely arrive as an insult. They arrive as a guidance counselor steering her toward a "safer" track, a teacher who is surprised when she does well, a family that means well but has never seen a woman in that role, an entire community that has already decided what girls like her end up doing.

The damage is quiet and cumulative. It is not one person telling her no. It is a hundred small signals that she should lower her sights, until lowering her sights starts to feel like her own idea.

These stories matter because being underestimated is one of the hardest obstacles to point to. There is no single villain, no one moment to push back against, just a steady current to swim against for years. We tell these stories to name that current out loud, and to show what it looks like to keep swimming.
